Problem:
Manufacturing was having a difficult time producing the Customer’s design and requested assistance in reviewing the product.
Original Customer Design:
Double Sided SMT
Component Mix on the bottom side created a manufacturing problem
Over 1900 components total
Board cost was extremely high
Some required functionality was not yet implemented in the design
Engineering Redesign:
Top Side Only
Less than 1000 components
Reduced BOM cost by 30%
Increased 1st pass yield from 18% - 84%
Very Cost Effective
Provided full functionality
What Was Done:
New core logic was selected which had already been proven in two other SCI designs
Integrated multiple discrete functions into an FPGA reducing components and cost
Redesigned the LCD inverter board to reduce cost
Redesigned and selected new vendor for cable assemblies to reduce cost
Selected new vendor for power module to reduce cost
Redesigned several sheet metal components to reduce cost
Result:
The redesigned product was easier to manufacture
Customer has decided to reduce his on site engineering staff and has committed to outsource future designs
Two additional design and manufacturing opportunities have been awarded to SCI resulting in manufacturing of boards and systems
Top Side
Top side has over 1000 components with RF cans at 5 locations
New design has no components on the bottom side |
